BTEC Celebrates Alumni Success !!

The Ellen Gutierrez Story

I attended Bollman Technical Education Center for Automotive Technology  levels 1 and 2 during my Junior and Senior year of high school. I went in knowing absolutely nothing about cars or tools. All I knew was if my gas light came on in my truck I should probably fill up soon or I might run out of gas. Throughout my time at Bollman I was met with challenges that I couldn't have imaged myself solving. I was backed by a teacher and classmates who wanted to see me succeed. I overcame challenge after challenge, whether it was mounting and balancing a tire or rebuilding an engine. I constantly had a support system. Bollman is a place where trade skills are celebrated, which is a welcomed change from the four year college push. Trades are so critical to our economy. We need people who can work with their hands and think on their own. Bollman taught me how to do both these things. After Bollman I went on to attend WyoTech in Larime Wyoming. I received a 4.0 GPA,  perfect attendance, and was named the outstanding student for the entire Diesel program. After graduation I found a job as a diesel mechanic for Asphalt Specialties in Erie, Colorado.  I've been working there for a little over a year now and I love it. I am constantly learning.  I work on anything from dump trucks to pickup trucks to heavy equipment. I do everything from brakes, to engine work, to tires and everything in between. I'm so glad I was given the skills and opportunities at BTEC that I wouldn't have gotten at a traditional hight school.    Ellen
